WIT'S CORE CURRICULUM [ LEVELS 1-5 ]

LEVEL 1A: FOUNDATIONS OF IMPROV

Ever wonder what improv is all about- is it as much fun as it looks? Here is your answer. This class introduces and explores the fundamentals of improv in an environment of teamwork, trust, and fun. It establishes a solid framework for good improv, and its life lessons are universal.

No prior experience necessary.

LEVEL 1B: FOUNDATIONS OF SCENEWORK

The groundwork was laid in Foundations of Improv. Foundations of Scenework continues to build on those fundamentals by exploring the basics of working through a scene. This class strengthens players' skills of observation and discovery, while delving into the ideas of pattern and game. Same fun. More scenes.

Successful completion of Level 1A or permission from WIT's Managing Director.

LEVEL 2: CHARACTER

This course gives students simple tools and approaches to develop fully-realized characters with committed emotion. Creating a character means discovering attitude, physicality and objectives to provide a filter through which to process information and interact with the world developed on stage.

LEVEL 3: SCENE

In Scene, students focus on creating scenes based on character, emotion, and theme. Students experience first-hand how rooting scenes in agreement permits discovery and complexity beyond simple premise and conflict. Students work to commit to the reality of the scene and react honestly from within a grounded character.

LEVEL 4: THE HAROLD

Here students encounter the mother of all longform improvisation styles: The Harold. Through this form's classic structure, students apply their scenework knowledge with increasing artistry and complexity. Pattern, pacing, editing, theme development, and ensemble connection come together in this class that gives students the skills necessary for all successful longform play.

LEVEL 5: PERFORMANCE PREP

Working from the base of The Harold, students in this course will have the opportunity to develop their own signature form. The class will perform during the eight week session, enabling participants to workshop their creation.

WIT'S ELECTIVE CLASSES [ WHEN AVAILABLE ]

ELECTIVE: MUSICAL IMPROV 1- SONG IMPROVISATION

This class will instruct participants on the basics of recognizing and initiating songs in different structures, including verse/chorus, tagline, duets, trios, and other forms. Emphasis will be given on singing in character, as well as communicating with the accompanist. There will be a class performance at the end of the eight week session.

Prerequisite:
Successful completion of Level 2 or permission from class instructor. Participants must be comfortable singing in front of others prior to enrolling, and while not needed, prior music theater experience is beneficial.

ELECTIVE: MUSICAL IMPROV 2- SCENES INTO SONGS

This class will instruct students on incorporating improvised songs into scenes. Emphasis will be placed on deciding when to sing, how to communicate with fellow improvisers musically, and how to creative a successful narrative with scenes and songs. There will be a class performance of an improvised musical at the end of the eight week session.

Successful completion of Level 3 and Music Improv 1 or permission from class instructor.

RELAX: IMPROV FOR ACTORS AND ACTING FOR IMPROVISERS

Relax focuses on achieving emotional honesty and vulnerability within the imaginary worlds of improvised scenes. The idea behind is: the less we try to be entertaining in a performance, and the more we just react honestly to the imaginary circumstances of a scene, the more likely it is that an audience will feel entertained. Relax also serves to hone some basic skills of both improv and acting: playing believable characters, listening, and collectively discovering a scene in the moment with your partner(s). Relax... and let it happen.
